With more than 8 million gallons of marine and fresh water, and more than 100,000 animals of 500 different species, the Georgia Aquarium is a gift to the people of Georgia from Bernie Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, and his wife Billi, through the Marcus Foundation. The Aquarium will be overseen by a nonprofit corporation run by a board of directors. The mission of the Georgia Aquarium is to be an entertaining, educational and scientific institution featuring exhibitions and programs of the highest standards, offering engaging and entertaining visitors' experiences, and promoting the conservation of aquatic biodiversity throughout the world.
AUDUBON AQUARIUM OF THE AMERICAS & IMAX THEATRE
San Antonio, Texas
The aquarium and park stand on 16 acres of prime riverfront property on the crescent of the Mississippi River between the historic French Quarter and Central Business District. This 110,000 square foot, three story structure was strongly influenced by the need to accommodate entire habitats that give visitors a view of nature both above and below water. Large volumes of curving, angled glass punctuate the exterior walls, with frames to extend the architecture into the park landscape. Colorful tiles, sculptural totems and small kiosks connect the main aquarium building to the riverside promenade.
THE INDIANAPOLIS MUSEUM OF ART
Indianapolis, Indiana
The museum, which underwent a $74 million expansion in 2005, is located on a 152-acre campus on the near northwest area outside downtown Indianapolis, northwest of Crown Hill Cemetery.
The Indianapolis Museum of Art is the ninth oldest and eighth largest encyclopedic art museum in the United States. The permanent collection comprises over 54,000 works, including African, American, Asian, and European pieces. Significant areas of the collection include: Neo-Impressionist paintings; Japanese paintings of the Edo period; Chinese ceramics and bronzes; paintings, sculptures, and prints by Paul Gauguin and the Pont-Aven School; a large number of works by J. M. W. Turner; and a growing contemporary art collection. Other areas of emphasis include textiles and fashion arts as well as a recent focus on modern design.
BOB BULLOCK TEXAS STATE HISTORY MUSEUM
Austin, Texas
The history museum is named after Bob Bullock, who championed its creation. The museum is located at 1800 North Congress Avenue in Austin, a few blocks north of the Texas State Capitol. The museum has three floors of interactive exhibits; the first floor theme is "land," the second floor theme "identity," and the third floor theme "opportunity." On the second floor of the museum, The Spirit Theater hosts a feature presentation entitled Star of Destiny. Designed by award-winning experience designer Bob Rogers and the design team BRC Imagination Arts, the special effects theater presentation takes audiences on an epic journey through the history of Texas, narrated by the character of Sam Houston. In addition to playing several shows, daily, the 200-seat Texas Spirit Theater is also used by the museum as a multimedia special effects theater for alternate film and lecture presentations. The museum also has an IMAX theater, which used to project films in the 70mm format but switched to digital projection in January 2015. The theater seats 400 and has a projector with both 2-D and 3-D capability.
